The tragic demise of Alexei Navalny has spotlighted the perilous journey anti-corruption activists and journalists embark on in their quest for transparency and accountability. Recognizing this critical issue, the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) convened a panel on March 27, 2024, titled “After Navalny: What More Can We Do to Protect Anti-Corruption Activists and Journalists?” This session aimed to explore actionable strategies to safeguard those at the forefront of combating corruption.
Moderated by Dr. Louise Shelley of George Mason University, the panel featured Julia Wallace, Cynthia Gabriel, Laurent Richard, and Eka Gigauri—each bringing insights from their respective corners of the globe. The dialogue underscored the essential role of protecting truth-tellers, not just as a matter of human rights but as a cornerstone for sustaining democratic societies, robust business environments, and the rule of law.
The session called for international solidarity, the adoption of secure communication technologies, and stronger legal frameworks to protect activists and journalists. The collective wisdom of the panelists provided a beacon of hope and a roadmap for future action.
CIPE’s commitment to these issues, in the wake of Navalny’s loss, reinforces the urgency of creating safer spaces for those who dare to challenge corruption. This event is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and the critical need for global cooperation in safeguarding the messengers of truth.
